Can You Extend PCP While Waiting for Your Next Car?
Written by Nathan Cafearo

A delayed replacement car does not automatically extend your PCP. Ask the lender early and compare the written extension terms with other ways to cover the gap.

Your replacement car is delayed, but the PCP end date has not moved. You can keep the current car beyond that date only under arrangements agreed with the finance provider. A dealer saying “keep it for now” is not enough without the lender confirming the terms.

Contact the lender before the scheduled end, even if the dealer still cannot give a firm delivery date. Until revised instructions are agreed, the existing payment and return deadlines matter.

The Call to Make Before the End Date

Have the agreement number, scheduled end date, current mileage and latest delivery estimate ready. Explain that the request is to cover a delayed replacement, and ask what you should do while it is being considered.

Ask the dealer for a written update too. A confirmed build or delivery date is more useful than a broad suggestion that the car should arrive soon. If the estimate changes, send the revised information to the lender promptly.

Some providers offer extensions only in specific circumstances. For example, Stellantis Financial Services says it may offer an extension where a customer has reordered a vehicle financed through it and delivery is delayed. That is a provider-specific possibility, not a promise that all PCP agreements can continue.

Call the lender and follow up in writing. Ask it to confirm what you must do while the request is being considered, including payment and return instructions. Keep scheduled payments in place unless the provider gives clear revised instructions.

If an extension is refused, work from the actual contractual options and arrange replacement transport. Leaving the car on your driveway, missing the final payment or cancelling the Direct Debit does not create an extension.

Which Arrangement Is the Lender Offering?

Ask exactly what is being proposed:

  • A short extension: a lender-approved arrangement allowing continued use for a stated period under specified terms.
  • Refinancing the final payment: new borrowing to keep the existing car, potentially over a much longer period.
  • Help with payment difficulties: support based on affordability concerns, which needs its own discussion.

These routes can have different checks, costs and credit-reporting consequences. Do not describe a delivery delay as financial hardship if that is not the issue, and do not conceal affordability problems while asking for an extension.

The guide to refinancing a PCP balloon payment explains the longer-term borrowing option. It should not be confused with paying for another few weeks' use.

The Terms That Decide Whether an Extension Works

The written extension needs to answer four practical questions:

  • When does it start and end? Include any notice period or minimum length.
  • What leaves your bank account? Record payment dates and amounts, interest and fees.
  • What happens to the Direct Debit? Confirm whether it continues and whether the original final-payment instruction changes.
  • What if delivery changes again? Establish the position on an early return, part-month refund or request for more time.

Also ask whether the balloon amount changes. An extra instalment does not necessarily reduce the final amount pound for pound. The lender should explain what each payment covers and what you would owe if you later chose to buy the car.

Do not build your budget around answers you have not received. An extension can be convenient and still be poor value if it commits you to paying beyond the period you need.

Extra Mileage and Bills During the Delay

Ask whether the mileage allowance increases and obtain the new total permitted mileage. Do not simply add your usual monthly mileage to the old limit unless that is what the lender confirms.

The car may cross a servicing, tyre-replacement or MOT date during the extension. You remain responsible for keeping it safe and meeting the agreement's requirements. Check whether any service plan, warranty or breakdown cover ends before the revised return date.

Insurance and tax need to remain appropriate throughout your use. Tell the insurer about relevant changes, including a later vehicle replacement date. A delay to a new-car order does not suspend the old car's running costs.

Extension or Temporary Transport?

Suppose an approved two-month extension would cost £280 per month and a service due during that period would cost £240. The immediate total is £800 before fuel, insurance, tax and other costs. These figures are illustrative.

A temporary hire car might have a higher headline monthly price but include items you would otherwise pay separately. Compare like for like: period, insurance, excess, mileage, deposit, delivery, fuel and cancellation arrangements.

A dealer-provided courtesy vehicle is another possibility to ask about, but do not assume you are entitled to one merely because delivery is delayed. Availability and any contractual remedy depend on the purchase terms and circumstances.

If your travel needs are limited, a combination of occasional hire and other transport may cover the gap. The useful comparison is the complete cost for the realistic waiting period.

When the Replacement Is Finally Ready

An extension can buy time to make a decision; it should not pressure you into accepting an unsuitable replacement agreement. Review the next car's price, finance terms and running costs afresh.

If you plan to part-exchange the current car, ask for an updated valuation and settlement figure when the handover date changes. An earlier offer may have expired, and additional mileage can affect the valuation.

Use the updated valuation and settlement when comparing PCP renewal options. The amount left from the old car may differ from the figure you were quoted when the replacement was first ordered.
