Does Buy Now, Pay Later Affect Car Finance?
Written by Nathan Cafearo

Buy now, pay later is still borrowing. Understand how outstanding plans, payment history and the timing of instalments can affect a car finance application.

Four interest-free shopping plans can still leave a substantial bill in the month you apply for car finance. A lender may consider those outstanding instalments, their repayment history and the money left for a car. Using buy now, pay later does not automatically mean refusal, but interest-free does not mean the commitment can be left out.

Add up the instalments due in the same month

Each purchase can feel manageable on its own. The pressure may appear when several instalments fall due close together, particularly alongside rent, utilities and existing credit repayments.

For illustration, suppose four plans require payments of £40, £55, £65 and £90 this month. Together they need £250. If a proposed car payment is £240, those two sets of commitments require £490 before fuel, insurance, tax or maintenance. This example does not represent a lender's acceptance threshold; it shows why looking at each checkout purchase separately can hide the total.

Check future months as well as this one. One plan might end next month while another has a larger final payment. A simple dated list is more useful than a rough guess at an average payment.

Make a dated commitment list

  • List each provider and the remaining balance.
  • Record the next payment date and amount, including any larger final instalment.
  • Check whether a return or refund has actually reduced the balance.
  • Review your credit reports for incorrect missed payments or duplicated accounts.
  • Include the car's running costs when checking what you can afford.

Returns deserve particular attention. Sending goods back does not always pause or cancel the payment schedule immediately. Follow the provider's process and keep proof of the return while checking that the account has been corrected. A refund you expect is different from one already applied.

If your income changes month to month, map the instalments against a realistic lower-income month. Our guide to car finance with irregular income covers that budgeting problem in more detail.

How the plans may appear in a finance assessment

BNPL providers do not all report information in exactly the same way. Some share account and payment data with credit reference agencies. The type of search used when you take a plan, and the way its repayments appear, depend on the provider and product.

Experian makes BNPL information available to participating lenders, so assuming these plans are invisible is unwise. A consumer score shown in an app also does not tell you everything a car finance provider will assess. Its decision can use credit information, your application and its own lending criteria together.

Bank statements or authorised account information may show payments to BNPL providers. That is not the same as the lender automatically seeing the contents of your shopping basket. The practical issue is whether the payments reveal commitments that need to be included in the affordability assessment.

Paying on time does not answer every affordability question

A good payment record is useful, but it does not prove that another agreement is affordable. You could have kept every existing commitment while leaving very little room for a car payment or an unexpected bill.

The reverse also needs care: one BNPL purchase does not prove financial difficulty. A lender considers the wider circumstances rather than a universal rule that any use is unacceptable. Our guide to car finance checks explains how income, expenditure and credit history fit together.

Missed payments are a separate concern. Depending on the provider and product, late payments can lead to charges, collections activity and entries on a credit report. Check the agreement and speak to the provider promptly if a payment may be missed.

Paying off plans before a car application

Reducing existing commitments may make the budget easier, but there is no guaranteed waiting period or balance that ensures approval. Clearing a plan also does not instantly remove accurate payment-history information from your credit file.

Ask yourself whether repayment would leave enough money for essentials and a sensible emergency buffer. Using all your rent money to close a small interest-free plan would not put you in a stronger practical position. Moving the balance to another form of borrowing can change the cost without reducing the total debt.

If you do repay, keep confirmation and check when the provider will update its records. Give accurate information if a car lender asks about a recently settled plan. Do not submit repeated applications simply to test whether the update has appeared.

What the July 2026 regulation changes mean here

From 15 July 2026, qualifying third-party BNPL lending came within the FCA's regulatory framework. The changes bring protections including proportionate affordability checks, clearer information, support for customers in difficulty and access to the Financial Ombudsman for eligible complaints.

The scope and agreement date matter; do not assume every older plan or every instalment arrangement has identical protection. More regulation also does not prevent another lender considering BNPL when assessing a car application. It remains money that must be repaid.

If existing repayments are becoming difficult, focus on resolving that pressure before adding a car commitment. Contact the BNPL provider and use free debt guidance where needed. A cheaper car, a later purchase or a smaller borrowing requirement may be more workable than trying to obtain approval while the current budget is already stretched.
