Car Finance Still Active After Part Exchange: What to Do

If your old finance still looks active after part exchange, confirm whether the lender has received and applied the settlement. Follow the payment trail before cancelling anything.
You have handed over the old car, but its finance account is still open. The first call is to the old lender: has the full settlement reached the correct agreement and been applied?
A dealer promising to settle is not the same as the lender receiving the money. Continue the required payments until the lender confirms clearance or agrees another arrangement, even if that means discussing the strain of two agreements while the problem is resolved.
Establish what the lender is waiting for
An entry in a credit-score app is not enough to establish that the dealer failed to pay. The lender's account, the borrower's credit report and the vehicle-history record are separate systems.
Get a case reference and a specific answer: no payment received, payment awaiting allocation, an amount still missing, or agreement fully settled. That determines who needs to act next.
Find the order form, invoice and settlement quote used at handover. Identify the old car's registration, agreed value, amount allocated to clearing finance and any shortfall or equity.
Check who agreed to pay the lender and by when. Was the dealer settling directly, or were you expected to make a payment yourself? A conversation in the showroom is harder to evidence than a clear written breakdown.
Our guide to part exchange with finance explains the normal arrangement. Here, the priority is establishing which step has not happened as agreed.
Follow the payment trail
The dealer says it has paid
If the dealer says it paid, request the payment date, amount, receiving lender and reference used. Ask for evidence that the transfer was completed rather than merely scheduled.
Pass the relevant details to the finance company through its secure channel and request a payment trace. A wrong agreement reference or payment sent to the wrong account can require investigation even though money has left the dealer's bank.
Allow for the lender's stated posting period while it traces the money. Black Horse, for example, says payments can take up to three working days to appear; that is its processing guidance, not an industry-wide deadline for account closure.
The payment is short or the quote expired
A settlement figure is normally valid until a stated date. If payment arrived late or the wrong amount was sent, ask the lender what is still required and why.
Do not assume the last monthly instalment and the settlement amount can simply be deducted from one another. The quote may already anticipate a collection, and the lender's calculation determines how a payment or refund is handled.
For an illustrative example, the dealer agrees to settle £8,400 by a particular date but sends £8,200. The car's handover has not cleared the £200 difference. Establish the cause and who must correct it under the purchase arrangement rather than allowing it to become an unexplained arrears balance.
The dealer has not sent the money
Write to the dealer identifying the commitment, handover date and lender's confirmation that payment is missing. Ask for prompt settlement and written evidence once completed.
Tell the lender that the car was part exchanged and provide the dealer's details and paperwork. Ask what payments you need to maintain while the problem is investigated. If paying both old and new agreements is causing difficulty, explain that immediately and discuss support.
Do not retrieve the old car, sell it again or withhold unrelated payments without advice. If the dealer has stopped trading or refuses to honour the arrangement, obtain consumer or legal advice promptly using the full documents.
Keep any complaint about the dealer's failure separate from a complaint about the lender's handling of money it actually received. Identifying the responsible business makes the next step clearer.
After the lender confirms the agreement is closed
Once the lender confirms closure, obtain the clearance letter and ask whether any overlapping collection is due back. Confirm the refund amount and route rather than guessing from the settlement quote.
For an incorrect live credit-file balance, ask when the lender reported settlement and inspect the agency's update date. If it remains wrong after the expected update, dispute it with both businesses using the clearance letter. A settled historical entry can remain; it is not an active debt.
If the issue is instead a finance marker on a vehicle history check, ask the lender to confirm release of its registered interest. That data correction is separate from proving the dealer paid.
